Bespoke Mid Century Modern Wardrobes
Shearwood Wardrobe
These were a commission for a pair of his and hers wardrobes in a midcentury modern styling but with a more contemporary minimal feel. They were made to stand in alcoves in a London townhouse bedroom. The 'his' wardrobe was to have three drawers and the 'hers' wardrobe with one less drawer to facilitate extra hanging length for dresses.
They were made in American Red Cherry, using solid wood for the doors drawer fronts and frame with veneered panels. The drawer sides and backs were made in a creamy English Sycamore for contrast and lightness when opening the drawers. The drawers were dovetailed in the traditional way and ran on full extension soft close runners.
The doors were made from solid cherry with dovetail housed support rails on the back, maintaining their flatness. They were hung with brass knife hinges and rebated into the frame which serves to keep the front of the frame appearing lighter and creating an all round stop to the doors, kept closed by discreet magnets, and prevents dust entering the cabinet. This and all the solid wood joinery details add up to distinct and unique pieces of furniture with clean lines but plenty of details and interest.
