Bespoke Curved Staircase

This was a special commission for a private residence new build eco home. Made from European Beech and celebrating the character of the wood, the staircase sits centrally in the house connecting the open full height entrance hall to the first floor living area and acts as a central feature to the building with a continuous solid wood handrail and gallery balustrade.

The design brief for the stairs was to be clean lined and contemporary whilst still being elegant and echoing traditional cut string Georgian staircases. The inside curve of the stair case spirals slightly towards the bottom resulting in a changing and tightening curve which opens out the entrance onto the staircase. The first four steps have curved risers which reduce in their radius as they progress up. All the while the geometry of the steps are carefully balanced, sometimes called dancing treads, to produce an even and constant walking line as you rise through the flights.

The curved stringers are laminated from constructional Beech veneers using an Eco Epoxy. The handrail is made from solid Beech using the traditional tangent handrailing method which produces an unrivalled elegance and presentation of grain. The simple profile with elegant tapered spindles and subtle chamfer and shadow gap details on the steps, combine to keep details present and yet un fussy and enhancing the curves of the design.
