Wood Balm, Board Salve, Spoon Butter or any combination, it is called many things but it is a Wax-Oil Blend. Foodsafe and made from natural ingredients, use on Boards, Spoons and Wooden Kitchenware whenever they begin to look tired or grey. Whilst it is not always necessary as the Boards will last well enough without, it can help to protect against extreme wetting and drying, and refresh the warm colours and tones of the wood. Simply rub a good amount into the wood with a soft cloth, leave over night or for a number of hours and then remove any excess and buff dry.
This is my own recipe based on traditional mixes used for wooden kitchenware but updated for a more modern sensibility. A precise blend of organic Beeswax and Carnauba wax is mixed with Fractionated Coconut Oil which replaces the traditional Mineral Oil, the Coconut Oil does the same job but is not produced from petrochemicals. The Fractionated Coconut Oil is a refined version of Coconut Oil and remains liquid at room temperature and will not go rancid over time and will not harden or cure. These properties help it to penetrate the wood deeply over time and carry the finish into the surface of the wood rather than rest on the surface only to be removed through use. Cold pressed Orange Oil is also added which as well as adding a refreshing scent helps carry the finish as well as offering anti-bacterial properties. A few drops of Pine & Juniper Essential Oils are added which also help with anti-bacterial properties and help lift the freshness of the scent.
For really thorough maintenance and very rewarding properties use the old adage of apply once a day for week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and once a year thereafter. If applied correctly in this manner it will result in a beautiful board with deep lustre and excellent repellant properties.
